Student Displays Program

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

The purpose of the UCI Libraries Student Displays Program (Program) is to cultivate welcoming, student-centered library spaces to foster students' sense of belonging. Student Displays also provide an excellent opportunity for the UCI Libraries to engage in collaborative projects with our students, encouraging community-building, educating, entertaining, and promoting the libraries' spaces, resources, and services. The goals of this pilot program align with UC Irvine and UCI Libraries missions.

  • Champion and feature students' academic activities, scholarship, and creative work.
  • Support student development in research and presentation.
  • Encourage interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Promote and support UC Irvine's diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Represent a diversity of topics and perspectives, student groups, and disciplines.

POLICIES FOR CONTENT

Selection Criteria

In accordance with the goals of the Program, Displays should showcase student work, research, or creative projects. Student Displays Proposals are welcome from students, student organizations, faculty, and staff.

The Libraries strongly encourage Displays that are interdisciplinary in nature and that have broad appeal to the campus and community.

Under the UCI Free Speech Policy, Student Displays are limited public spaces that the Libraries are creating to serve the purpose of the program described above. See the UCI Free Speech Policy, section 900-01 ("Classrooms, laboratories, libraries and other academic spaces are limited public spaces dedicated to speech for teaching, learning and research, but they are not forums for the general exercise of free speech rights.").

The UCI Libraries Pilot Student Display Program Group will select and schedule displays in a manner consistent with the purpose of the Program and reserves the rights to refuse any proposal and to review items prior to installation.

All Displays will carry the disclaimer, "The views and opinions expressed in this display do not necessarily represent those of UCI Libraries, UC Irvine, or the University of California." (or a similar disclaimer).

Copyright

All Displays must respect the copyrights of content creators, and the use of copyrighted materials must comply with U.S. copyright law and University copyright policy. See the University of California copyright policy and guidance webpage for more details about fair use in education, research, and creative expression.

Political Endorsement or Solicitation

Selling, fundraising, and solicitation are strictly prohibited, and Displays may not promote the financial profit of any individual, organization, or commercial enterprise.

Displays may not endorse or promote any political party, ballot measure, or political candidate for public office.

Display Procedures and Libraries Operations

Student display exhibitors are responsible for the setup and takedown of their respective Displays during regular library hours. UCI Libraries has a limited selection of display mediums available for use. (To learn more, download our Locations and Materials PDF for photos and descriptions of the available display equipment and accessories.) Please note not all display equipment and accessories might not be available for each Display.

All display materials must be placed so as to accommodate physical safety considerations and must not interfere with the primary functions of the library buildings.

In addition, student display exhibitors participate in this program at their own risk. UCI Libraries are not responsible for loss or damage of display materials before, during, or after an exhibition or for any feedback or comments that student display exhibitors may receive from others.

UCI Libraries provide educational resources and services that support learning and scholarship and seek to create an atmosphere that is conducive to study and to respect the needs of those using Libraries services. Displays may not disrupt this environment or atmosphere. See the UCI Libraries User Rights and Responsibilities for more details. See also UCI's Guidance Concerning Disruption of University Activities.

Displays will typically be on display for a limited period (no more than one academic quarter), but the Libraries may remove a Display earlier or relocate a Display in order to maintain Libraries operations.

Student Displays may only be installed in designated areas within Libraries building. (To learn more, download our Locations and Materials PDF for photos and descriptions of the available locations.) Please note that your preferred location might not be available.

Questions that arise concerning a proposal's acceptance/rejection or concerns/complaints regarding a Display should be directed to library administrative staff by emailing partners@uci.edu.
