Primary Sources Workshop

Students working at desk

UCI Libraries Special Collections and Archives provides a variety of instructional programs for both undergraduate and graduate classes in a range of disciplines and subjects, including:

  • General information about how to locate and use special collection materials for research purposes.
  • Customized bibliographies of our materials for classes.
  • Class presentations on selected materials pertaining to specific subjects, historic periods, formats or genres.
  • Instruction sessions designed to introduce students to primary sources and original research materials, how those materials might be used for research assignments, and how to locate secondary research materials.

We will work closely with faculty and instructors in designing all sessions as well as:

  • Design of course assignments that encourage the use and appreciation of original primary sources.
  • Individual consultation with students on their research projects.

Instructional sessions can be presented in your classroom or in the library classrooms, depending on the Special Collections and Archives materials being used. Rare and fragile materials must remain in Langson. Classes should be arranged as far in advance as possible to allow for preparation and to insure the availability of staff and classrooms. Note that no food or drink are allowed in the classroom during sessions with Special Collections and Archives materials.
